Calculating the Size of Your Parcel in Cubic Metres

We use 'cubic metre' as a unit to measure the amount of stuff we can fit into that cube, also called the volume of the cube. So we could use cubic metres to explain how much cement you would need to fill the patio in your backyard or how much sand you would need to fill your sandbox.

But how do we measure volume? It's different than measuring the distance of a line or the area of a flat shape. To find volume, you measure the space or object from three sides; width, depth, and height; and then multiply the measurements together.

Say, for example, that you want to measure the volume of your wheelie bin. You find that it measures 93.5cm high, 48cm wide and 56cm long. To find the cubic metres, you multiply the three together in metres 0.93m X .48m X .56m = 0.25 cubic metres.

If it fits in a wheelie bin, we'll take it!

Examples:

  1. A 40” TV in its box, that weighs 17kgs and measures 95 X 50 X 40cm.
Cubic metre calculation is 0.95 X 0.5 X 0.4 = 0.19 cubic metres so will be accepted at Oversize Facilities.
  2. An armchair that weighs 25kgs and measures 76 X 85 X 93cm.
Cubic metre calculation is 0.76 X 0.85 X 0.93 = 0.6 cubic metres and will NOT be accepted at Oversize Facilities.
